As I watched my girls in the last minutes before leaving for school this morning, I realized how my prayer has been to encourage teamwork in them is really paying off. Not that they always get along, as sisters often do not get along. As a mom of teenagers, I often encourage teamwork, but my daughters seem to take things to a whole new level that really got me to thinking.
So a little background here. I have 3 kids in 8th grade this year. After Christmas my stepdaughter moved in with us and now we have three 8th graders not only in the same house, but the same school, and all of the same classes! Its funny how things work out isn’t it?!
The girls are so much different in a lot of ways, and are typical sisters who often argue. What is amazing to see is how they lean into each other so much that you would never think that they were not biologically twins, well except for the fact that one is 5′ 1″ and the other is 5′ 7″ and they are 6 months difference in their ages.
So back to my story about this morning. These two girls, they only carry one lunch box. Why do they do this? I’m not all that certain other than one left their lunch box at school once and then it got to be a sisterly thing for them to carry only one.So now all throughout the day they must check in with each other to pack their lunch, carry lunch, eat together in the lunchroom, pack everything back up, and bring it home.
Normally this is a 1 person job. We may pack our kids lunch or encourage them do it themselves, but not many choose to do it together. We are independent and just do it ourselves, its easier right? But seeing my girls rely on each other for such a basic thing throughout the day, something so simple that they could do it by themselves…it makes my heart melt. This has been going on for 4 months now. When I wash their lunch bags, I sit all 3 out together, but they always leave one. My son takes one and my girls take the other one.
Like most people we like to go about our day by ourselves. Its easier we think. Just do it, get it done and over with, right? As I was thinking about how my girls lean into one another, I was thinking about how sometimes we chose to be alone instead of leaning into God throughout our day. We should always be praying, but we chose to go it alone so many times, don’t we? Lets do some teamwork and let God in on our team.
“Never stop praying.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17
As I draw closer to God through prayer, I want to pack my lunch with him and share it with him all throughout the day. I want to share everything with him! My good and my bad, because everything is so much easier and joyful when He is by my side. This doesn’t mean that I don’t want a good lunch companion also, but its a good reminder not to leave God at home when you are packing up for your work day or whatever you may be doing each day.
Do we also take God along with us throughout the day? Checking in during our daily routine? Not just when things go wrong, like when sisters get into an argument. Lets work on our teamwork with God so that our prayer lives can thrive!
